When Is Your Passport Considered Invalid?

Several factors may render your passport invalid for travel:

If you find yourself in any of these situations, there are two primary routes for securing your travel document quickly:

  1. Submitting your application to a Regional Passport Agency or
  2. Submitting your application through an authorized passport expediting service.

While it is possible to obtain a passport renewal in as little as 24 hours, be prepared for potential processing delays that can extend the wait time for an emergency passport renewal to up to 3 business days.

Ensure You Qualify for Emergency Passport Renewal

Before proceeding, it’s essential to confirm that you meet the following criteria for an emergency passport renewal:

  • Possession of Most Recent US Passport: You are required to submit your previous passport along with your application and supporting documents. A lost or stolen passport cannot be renewed.
  • Recent Issuance: Your last passport must have been issued within the past 15 years. Although U.S. passports are valid for 10 years, they can still be renewed if expired within the last 5 years.
  • Passport In Good Condition: The U.S. Department of State will not accept excessively damaged passports for renewal, such as those that are torn, burnt, mutilated, or water-damaged. Check to make sure that your passport meets the condition requirements for passport renewal.
  • Adult Passport: Only adult passport books or passport cards are eligible for emergency renewal. For children’s passports, expedited services are available but not emergency services.

If your existing passport does not meet these requirements, don’t worry—you can still obtain emergency passport services by following the steps outlined in How to Expedite a New Passport Application: A Complete Guide for obtaining a new passport in an emergency.

Understanding Life-or-Death Emergency Criteria

The top expedited passport service tier is designated for travel necessitated by serious health issues affecting you or a family member. According to the U.S. Department of State, eligible family members are immediate family such as a parent, legal guardian, child, spouse, sibling, or grandparent. Other relatives, such as aunts, uncles, or cousins, do not qualify.

Please note: There are medical travel exceptions. Simply seeking medical treatment or medication abroad does not meet the criteria for emergency service.

You will need to provide adequate proof of your emergency situation to the Department of State to qualify for this expedited service.

If you have a life-or-death emergency after 8:00 p.m. (ET) on Mondays through Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays, call 202-647-4000. Note: This number is not for use between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. (ET) on Mondays through Fridays.

For all other inquiries, contact them during business hours at 1-877-487-2778.

Navigating Emergency Passport Renewal at a Regional Agency

If you choose to pursue an emergency passport renewal independently, it’s important to be aware that there is no room for errors. Even minor mistakes can delay your travel plans.

Follow these steps to successfully renew your passport at a Regional Passport Agency:

1. Schedule an Appointment. You must have an appointment to secure a spot at a Regional Passport Agency.

The National Passport Information Center operates an automated appointment system available 24/7 at 1-877-487-2778. If you prefer to speak to a representative, they are available Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. EST.

Note: Walk-in appointments are possible but risky, especially in emergencies. Scheduling in advance is highly recommended.

For the full list of Regional Passport Agency locations, check our passport agency page.

2. Gather Required Documents. Ensure you have the following documents:

  • Completed Form DS-82 (the standard U.S. passport renewal application).
  • Your most recent U.S. passport (must have been issued within the last 15 years and be undamaged).
  • 1 recent passport photo, adhering to the size and content guidelines provided by the Department of State.
  • Payment for the renewal and expedited service fees, plus an additional fee for 1-2 day priority mail express delivery if applicable.
  • Documentation supporting any name changes, if needed.
  • Evidence of travel plans, as most regional agencies require this for emergency service.

3. Arrive Early. If you live far from the regional agency or have a tight schedule, leave early for your appointment to account for any potential delays.

Using an Expedited Passport Courier Service

For those who prefer a hassle-free option, employing a registered passport expediter to handle the renewal process on your behalf is the fastest, most cost-effective, and convenient choice. This method minimizes the risk of mistakes and ensures a quicker turnaround.

To utilize an expedited passport service, you must follow these two steps:

  1. Fill out Form DS-82.
  2. Submit the required documents to the passport expediter:

Given the urgency of your situation, opt for same-day passport service and use expedited shipping for document delivery.

Upon receiving your complete documentation, the expediter will submit your application to the Regional Passport Agency, ensuring you receive timely updates on processing times. Once your application is approved, your renewed passport will be collected and sent to you via express mail.
