UK’s New ETA: What US Travelers Need to Know for 2025

UK’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

Recently, I posted about the current and upcoming travel authorizations that will be required when visiting the European Union. Similar to the new travel authorizations in the EU, the United Kingdom has introduced its own electronic travel requirement: the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

If you’re planning a trip to the UK soon, understanding the new ETA is crucial. This new system, designed to enhance border security, will impact many travelers who currently enjoy visa-free entry to the United Kingdom.

The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) in the UK, just like the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) in the EU, and the Entry/Exit System (EES) in the Schengen Area are all part of the new digital border security measures, but they operate separately. To help you better understand these new travel requirements, I’ll explain what you need to know about the UK’s ETA and how to apply for it.

UK’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Explained

The UK’s ETA is a new requirement for non-visa nationals who do not need a visa for short visits to the UK. This includes purposes such as tourism, business trips, or transiting through the UK.

Who needs an ETA?

The ETA applies to travelers who are not British or Irish citizens and who do not already require a visa to enter the UK. It is required for visitors of all ages—including children and babies. This means that if you have traveled to the UK for short stays in the past without needing a visa, you will now need to obtain an ETA before your next trip.

How do you get an ETA?

You’ll need to apply online before your trip to the UK. The fastest way to apply is through the UK ETA app (available on the App Store and Google Play). Not an app person? No problem; you can apply online here. The application process is expected to be straightforward, requiring you to provide personal details, and passport information, and answer some eligibility questions.

Key features of the UK ETA:

Once you have an ETA, you can:

  • Visit the UK for up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business, or short-term study.
  • Visit the UK for up to 3 months on the Creative Worker visa concession.
  • Visit the UK for a permitted paid engagement.
  • Transit through a UK airport if you will pass through border control. (If you’re not sure, it’s best to check with your airline.)
  • Travel to the UK as many times as you want while you have an ETA.

Keep in mind that if your reason for visiting the UK isn’t listed above, you must check if you need a visa instead.

It’s also important to know that an ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK. Upon arrival, you will still need to either:

  • see a Border Force officer or
  • use an ePassport gate.

Please be aware: If you have a criminal record or were previously refused entry into the UK, you must apply for a Standard Visitor visa instead.

When will the ETA be implemented?

The rollout of the ETA has already begun. As of January 8, 2025, the ETA is already a requirement for nationals of certain countries, including the United States

The UK government is implementing the ETA in phases based on nationality. You can find the most up-to-date information on which nationalities are currently required to have an ETA on the official UK government website. Be sure to check this information well in advance of your planned travel dates for any updates!

What do you need to apply?

When applying for an ETA, you will likely need to provide:

  • A valid passport
  • Personal details such as your name, date of birth, and contact information
  • Answers to questions about your background and eligibility to travel to the UK
  • An email address
  • An approved payment method (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Apple Pay or Google Pay)

How much does an ETA cost?

Applying for the UK ETA costs £10 (approximately $12.50 USD) if you use the official UK ETA app or apply online through GOV.UK. Be cautious of other unofficial websites, as they may charge more.

Be aware: Starting April 9, 2025, the application fee will increase to £16 (approximately $20.00 USD).

Important Note: These USD amounts are approximate conversions based on the exchange rate at the time of publication. You should always check the current exchange rate when budgeting for your trip.

How soon can I get an ETA?

You can usually expect a decision on your ETA application within 3 business days. In many cases, it’s quicker than that. However, sometimes it might take longer.

You’ll receive an email with confirmation of your approved ETA, so be sure to check around the third business day after submission. Remember, it’s automatically linked to your passport so you won’t need to print anything or carry a separate document.

Your ETA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever happens first.

Help! I have an urgent need to travel to the UK, but I haven’t received my confirmation email!

No worries! According to the UK’s official ETA site, after you apply for an ETA, you can travel to the UK while waiting for approval.

Staying Informed

As new travel requirements are introduced, it’s essential to stay informed about the specific rules that apply to your travel plans. Always refer to the official government sources for the most up-to-date information:

Planning your international travel now may involve a bit more prep, but understanding these new border security electronic systems will help ensure your trips abroad are stress-free.
